Time Card Laser Labels

What does this program do?

This program updates the standard employee label printing program found in Time Cards, Master File Lists.  The standard program prints labels on a dotmatrix printer using the one-up (one across) 1 inch by 3.5 inch label.  Some companies use these labels to put on time cards or weekly time sheets.  This updated program adds the choice of using a laser printer for printing the labels that are 2-5/8 x 1”, 30 labels per page while maintaining the choice of using the old format if desired.  (See below for the compatible laser label format.)

The updated program adds the question to the selection screen:

Use Laser Labels  YES

The default answer is YES which will cause the program to use the new laser format.  You can change the answer to NO if you want to use the old format on a dotmatrix printer.  So the new updated program still prints the old format, but has the new option for printing on a laser printer as well.

There is no need to perform this update unless you want to use laser labels.

How to download the program update file.

CAUTION: Some companies have a customized label program.  The standard label program produces a label that appears as:

                   101       RICHARDS              JOHN

                   Special #  1234567          Prog 100

                   04/02/02    (the date is optional)

Some customized systems may have a different layout or contain different information on the label.  If your system currently produces labels that look like the above example, then you can perform this update without any concerns.  If your labels do not appear as above, then call us if you have a desire to update your program to use a laser printer for your labels.

The program update is provided below for downloading to your system as a self-extracting archive file.  There are three program files that are all bundled into one file that when executed, expands the files into place.  The three files are:

                   XOPRLB        XOPRLB1       XOPRLB2

To update your program we will not go through a formal install process through the Resource Manager.  Instead, we will simply copy the archive XOLASERL that has the new programs in to the Time Card subdirectory, then expand the archive and replace the old program files with the new ones of the same name.

The link below will prompt you to download and save the archive file with the new programs.  You will need to know where your Time Card directory is located:

* On what drive is your Time Card system located?

* What is the base subdirectory for your OSAS system?

You can answer both of these questions by RIGHT-CLICKING on the icon that you use to start the OSAS system.  After you right-click on the icon, choose Properties.  On the Shortcut tab you should see the Start In location.  (Note: If you have an older system you may need to click on the Program tab and look for the Working location.)  Typically the Start In location will be something like:  O:\OSAS\PROGRM.  The first letter is your drive location and \OSAS is your base location.  The base location could have \OSAS6 or \OSAS61 instead of simply \OSAS.  You should note exactly what your drive and base location is.  After you have your base starting location, you can Cancel out of the properties.

The place where you want to save this new program update is in your Time Card subdirectory.  This is located at your base location plus \PROGXO.  So if your base location is O:\OSAS, then you want to save your update to O:\OSAS\PROGXO.

Click on the link below to download the new update, and save it in your Time Card subdirectory:

Note: If you do not have access to your Time Card system while you are on the internet, you may need to save this program update file on to a floppy disk.  You may save this file on a floppy, and use Windows to copy the file into your Time Card directory later.

Since the new programs are in a ZIP archive file, we must expand them in place in order to use the new programs.  To expand the archive, you can go to My Computer, select the drive location where your Time Card system is located, select the base location, and then select the folder PROGXO.  When you are in this folder you will see dozens of files.  Look for the new XOLASERL file.  If you double-click (with left button) on this file, it will start the expansion of the archive.  You will see a DOS window appear and a prompt if you want to overwrite the XOPRLB file.  You should say yes to overwrite this file and the second file XOPRLB1.  After you have replaced these files your update is complete and you may use the new program.  (Note: The XOPRLB2 file is the new laser program so it does not have a file to replace.)

Using Laser Printers for Labels

The laser labels are designed to print on labels that are 2-5/8 x 1 inches.  These come on sheets with 30 labels per page (3 labels across, 10 down).  One common supplier for this format is the Avery form codes: 5160 and 5960 (shop for generic versions).  Since the new label is narrower than the old one, the new layout looks like this:

                   RICHARDS        JOHN

                   101         Sp # 1234567

                   04/02/2002  Prog 100

Doing forms or labels on a laser printer is a little challenging for the programmer.  Laser printers vary greatly in margins, fonts, and configuration options.  You may have access to a laser printer that is directly connected to your computer with a printer cable, or you may use a laser printer accessed through your network.  Generally the way Open Systems is configured, directly accessed laser printers have a 2-character alias or reference code that you use to print such as LP or P2.  Networked or Windows printers generally have a 3 character alias reference code such as LPL or PSL.  You may have one of these choices or both of these choices on your computer.

Test the printing of the labels with a small set of data, 40-60 labels.  You can test it using plain paper in the printer and simply hold the paper on top of the labels to see how it will work.  If you have a choice of print devices, the 3 character printer devices (LPL or PSL) will generally work the best with little need for additional configuration.

If you use a direct connect printer to device /dev/lptx, then it is a sure bet that you will need to configure a print device for use with the labels.  (You will find the print creeps UP the page as it nears the bottom of the page.)  You will need to configure the device to have a special Standard Print setting.  Refer to the following document on this website for more information about laser printers:

Laser Printers and Forms Alignment

If you have any trouble with the alignment, try the alternate printer device if you have a choice.  If you can’t seem to get the alignment right, give us a call and we can work it out with you.

Your feedback is always welcomed.
